August 26-August 30

Hello Parents!

I am loving your children! They are amazing. I can tell we are going to have a fantastic year.

THINGS TO KNOW

We will be doing Acadience (formerly DIBELS) testing Friday. Please try to have your child to school this day.

There is no school September 2nd in observance of Labor Day.

We will be going to Cedar Breaks Thursday, September 5th. I will need 3 chaperones. If you are interested, please indicate on the permission slip.We will be leaving at 9:00 and will return by 12:30-1:00.

Starving Student cards have come home. If you would like to purchase, keep the card and return $25. If you would not like to purchase the card, send it back to school. Cards are due back by Friday.

Here's What's Happening In...

MATH:
We are currently working in Chapter 1. Students are working with single and multi-digit multiplication, division, and expressions. A few students are struggling with their math facts. Please practice this skill at home to help your child be successful. We use multiplication every day in fifth grade.

CKLA:
We are reading Reverend Abbott and Those Bloodshot Eyes. This is another personal narrative in our reader. We are also working with literary devices simile, metaphor, idiom, personification, hyperbole, and onomatopoeia.  Students will choose two of these to use in their personal narrative describing a vacation they have been on.

SCIENCE:
Students are learning about heredity. We are learning about dominate and recessive genes, using a punnet square to predict possible outcomes of offspring traits, and will be creating monsters with various features.

HISTORY:
Everyone is off to a great start working toward their Patriot Award.  We are also learning about the Spanish settlement in the Americas, the migration of the Pilgrims, and the first colonies.

Thank you for reading with your children each day.
